I have always loved the natural world, which led to my becoming a Geography teacher. My art practice focuses largely on landscape or seascape painting in oils, on canvas or board. My paintings usually aim for a sense of calm and beauty. I hope those who see my paintings would experience that calm in the midst of a restless and fast-paced life.
Besides landscape, I am also experimenting with abstracts, most of which have a landscape influence. Although most of my painting occurs in my home studio, I do sometimes venture into the world to paint en plein air. When painting outside I use gouache or oil paints.
I have not had formal training in art (unless you consider studying art to the HSC as formal training!). However, I have undertaken workshops with several professional artists in Newcastle and have even enjoyed a plein air painting workshop in Tuscany.
Art is not just a hobby for me, it is an essential creative pursuit that enriches my life and, I hope, the lives of those who view my work.
